What Is bipolar DISORDER?
Bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depressive disorder) can manifest itself through one of the following conditions:
bipolar I, bipolar II, or cyclothymic disorder. These three conditions are categorized as manic, hypomanic, and major depressive episodes.
the different types of bipolar disorder
Bipolar I
is considered to be the most extreme form of bipolar disorder. Patients with this condition may experience drastic mood swings on a day-to-day basis, from feelings of high energy and excitement to manic episodes of depression and irritability. One day you’re up and the next day you’re down. Without treatment, bipolar I can turn into a never-ending cycle that ultimately disrupts your happiness and peace of mind.
While
bipolar II may also cause mood swings, the manic or depressive episodes are balanced out by times of normality. People are generally diagnosed with bipolar II after they experience a major depressive episode at some point in their lives.
Cyclothymic disorder is the mildest version of bipolar disorder out of the three. This condition triggers mood swings on a more frequent basis. However, the mood swings are much less extreme than those experienced by patients with bipolar I or II.
